Pine forests, chestnut groves, tree-like shrubs and a variety of deciduous bushes cover the slopes of Mount Olympos. The lower elevations are covered by the olive grove of Lesvos, while in the entire region grows a variety of herbs and wild flowers including rare and protected species. The solid summit rises bare making the mountain visible from a great distance and it gives an unobstructed view to big parts of the island. This mountainous area is classified as protected area in the NATURA 2000 Network. It is an extraordinary experience to walk any of the paths of Mount Olympos, be it cobblestone or dirt, but by choosing to go up to the peak of Profitis Ilias (highest peak of the island, 967m same as Lepetymnos), you follow a Network Trail that on its way to the top takes the trekker through the greatest cobblestone paths of the region, the crop-producing chestnut grove, dense, low forest vegetation and the special limestone ‘scree’.
